Destination: Granada
Nestling at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the South of Spain, Granada is home to Alhambra Palace, the finest example of Arab architecture in the whole of Spain.
Only two hours from the Costa del Sol, you can be ski-ing in the Sierra Nevada in the morning and sunbathing on the beach in the afternoon!
Granada is full of history, being ruled by the Moors for over 800 years shaping much of the city’s architecture and culture. It is most famous for being home to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Alhambra Palace, which is widely regarded as being one of the 10 architectural wonders of the world!
If there is one don’t-miss destination in Andalucia, it is the Alhambra Palace! Attracting over 2 million visitors a year, you do need to prebook your tickets. The children will enjoy exploring the Nasrid Palaces or the climbing up the towers of the Alcazaba. To get an overview of Granada, perhaps take a ride on the “hop on- hop off” bus and see all the different places of interest and get a spectacular view of the Alhambra from the Mirador de San Nicolas and wander around the tiny streets of the Moorish Albaicín, and step inside one of the Moroccan "teterias" (tea rooms) for a mint or fruit tea with Moroccan cakes and pastries.
Granada is well worth the visit, although the city can present some challenges when travelling with children in pushchairs! As like many of the historic Spanish towns, there are cobbled streets and several steps to negotiate, however the General life at Alhambra Palace is fairly buggy-friendly, but best to avoid the Nastrid Palaces.
